About “Seventy-Two Virgins”

Thanks to horror writer Lee Allan Howard for publishing “Seventy-Two Virgins” in Thou Shalt Not…, an anthology of horror stories based on the Ten Commandments. Before the submission deadline, he mentioned online that almost all stories received were about the Sixth Commandment (Thou shalt not murder), with some about the Seventh Commandment (Thou shalt not commit adultery), and very few about the other commandments. He needed to spread the stories among all Ten Commandments.

I figured that if I wrote something about one of the less popular commandments, my story would have a higher chance of getting into the anthology. I chose the Third Commandment: thou shall not take God’s name in vain, that is, do not misuse His name.

Choosing the Third Commandment worked, and Lee accepted the story despite it having no Jewish or Christian characters.

There actually was a Palestinian casino. The Palestinian Authority and Casinos Austria International Limited opened Oasis Casino in Jericho in 1998. It employed more than one thousand people and attracted thousands of Israelis every day. It was the first legal casino anywhere near or in Israel, and Israelis didn’t mind entering Yasser Arafat’s territory to gamble. However, some local people thought it was a scheme to enrich corrupt Palestinian leaders.

Oasis Casino shut down during the Second Intifada in 2000, only two years after it opened.
